Building coummunity, leveraging human and natural resources through creating economic, social and environmental opportunity—this is the work of the Garden Island Resource Conservation and Development, Inc. Its broad mission results in projects, workshops and programs, some of which spin off into viable entities of their own.
VISION: Mâlama ‘Âina o Kaua‘i. The community working together towards a harmonious relationship with the environment.
MISSION: To carry out a plan for the orderly conservation, development and prudent use of natural and human resources to improve economic, social and environmental opportunities for the people of Kaua‘i County.
From a community-built playground in Hanapepe to establishing a permanent exhibition on rare and endangered native plant species in our nation’s botanic garden in Washington, D.C.; from workshops in agroforestry to propagation of native plants for use in landscaping; from collaborative community problem solving through the now spun-off Kaua‘i Planning Action Alliance to helping through the Kaua‘i Invasive Species Committee to coordinate the control of incipient alien species that threaten our Hawaiian environment and affect our island’s economic development — the work of the Garden Island Resource Conservation & Development, Inc. is widespread, variable and innovative.
